Biography

Originally a firefighter who played part-time with Seaham Red Star in the Northern League Second Division before making the League grade with Ipswich Town (1985-87:67+17,11). A £47,500 fee took him to Manchester City (1988-89:30+9,11) in August 1988 then Birmingham City (1989-92:176,43) paid £175,000 for his services.

Then featured for Stoke City (1992-95:208,31), Burnley (1996-97:43+1,5), Brentford on loan (97/98:12,1) and Northampton Town on loan (97/98:8,1). Having made over 400 League appearances, became player-coach at Altrincham (98/99:3+3,0) for a few months in 1998 and then player-boss at Witton Albion (1998-01:91+5,32) from December 1998 to 2001.

Turned around Nantwich’s fortunes after being appointed Player Manager in November 2001 steering the Dabbers away from the NW Counties League Division One relegation zone and, the following season, guided them into the top eight. Played most of his football at Jackson Avenue as a central defender, leaving during the 2004 close season to become Player-Manager at Newcastle Town but sacked from that post in November 2006.

Later could be found running Sports Studies courses at South Trafford College
