Match Report

Nantwich swept to a 7-day double over high-flying Mossley with a 1-0 win at a blustery Jackson Avenue.
The visitors had more of the play in a stormy game but the Dabbers stuck to the task and nicked victory with a late strike from Simon Hackney. With five minutes left, battling substitute Adam Vickers won the ball in the middle of the park and set up Hackney on the left. The winger’s long cross eluded Paul Lythe in the Mossley goal and finished up in the back of the net off the inside of the post.
Mossley had had the better of earlier chances. Stephen Sheil headed wide early on and Mark Phillips flashed a header wide of the target from Rob Matthews’ free kick. For Nantwich, Hackney was the main threat but with chances at a premium at either end, the game looked to be drifting to a goalless stalemate.
Then came the Dabbers’ late winner and, three minutes later, the game was all but over when the visitors were reduced to ten men. Tony Callaghan’s two-footed lunge at Melford Knight earned him a second yellow card so, as in the previous Saturday’s clash at Seel Park, Mossley again finished with just ten men on the park.
It was a dogged performance by Nantwich against a combative Mossley outfit and player-boss Nigel Gleghorn, again marshalling the defence superbly, will be pleased that his side kept a clean sheet for the third game on the trot.
