Match Report

Nantwich made heavy weather of overcoming lowly Warrington at a dull, damp Jackson Avenue and had to hold out a late Warrington storm to hang on to the points. Nantwich were still missing a number of players due to injuries and gave a first start to ex-Altrincham and Flixton right winger Vernon Rowland.
It was two quality moments in the second half that proved the difference between the two sides but Nigel Gleghorn will be frustrated that his high-flying side were unable to kill off the game after Melford Knight’s header from Adam Vickers’ quality cross had put the home side 3-1 up midway through the second half.
Ten minutes earlier, Vickers had bagged his second, exquisitely rifling into the corner of the net after clever skill from Jon Dawson had set him up with an inch perfect pass. Vickers’ first, scored on 25 minutes after visiting custodian O’Hanlon fluffed a free-kick from Wes Wilkinson, had pulled Nantwich level after Lee Webster had headed the visitors into a 22nd minute lead.
But the home side lost their composure in a desperate last 15 minutes which saw Paul Hives pull one back with a well-struck long range effort, David Tickle strike the home bar and Mike Heverin spurn a golden opportunity to equalise when he ballooned over from close range.
The win keeps Nantwich in a strong league position ahead of Tuesday’s home derby clash with Alsager Town.
