Biography
Better known as Alan Ball (snr) on account of the glittering career of his son Alan, one of England’s 1966 World Cup winners. Alan (snr) himself had a career as a professional footballer, progressing from Bolton Boys to play for Southport (46/47:2,0lge) straight after the War.
Joined Birmingham City in the summer of 1947 but returned to Southport (1948-49:41,9lge) after not making the first team at St.Andrews. Then served Oldham Athletic (50/51:7,1lge) and Rochdale (51/52:5,1lge) before dropping into non-league football with Oswestry Town (52/53).
Became Oswestry’s player-manager in 1953, until 1955, and managed Welsh side Borough United (58/59). Took over at Ashton United in the summer of 1959, managing the Robins for two seasons. Appointed Nantwich manager ahead of the 62/63 campaign, he was in charge for four seasons, guiding the club to the ‘treble’ of Mid-Cheshire League Champions, Cheshire Amateur Cup and Mid-Cheshire League Cup in 63/64.
Left Nantwich in the summer of 1966 to take up a coaching role with Stoke City. Subsequently coached Manchester City and, in 1967, Cork Celtic. Later that year he was appointed as Manager of Halifax Town and was at the Shay for three years before becoming manager of Preston North End. Enjoyed three years in the hot-seat before a stint in Sweden managing IF Saab and returning to manage his old club, Southport (74/75).
Returned to Sweden in the summer of 1975 to manage Sirius and after a spell back at Halifax (76/77), he managed Swedish side Djurgartens IF for the 1979 season – returning home to scout for Blackpool in 80/81. Tragically died in a car accident in Cyprus.
