Biography

(Known as Billy Taylor for his first 18 months at London Road.)
Joined Bury as an amateur at the age of 16 and was also on the books of Stockport County but didn’t make the breakthrough into the Football League and signed for Caernarvon. A French polisher by trade, he was a regular for the Dabbers from 1964/65, returning to London Road in October 1966 after a short stint at Oswestry Town. In 1965 he gained his Preliminary FA Coaching certificate and a year later earned his full FA Coaching Award. Signed for Radcliffe Borough (67/68) after leaving Nantwich before becoming youth team coach at Bury in 1968.
Later coached the Shakers’ reserve side and in the summer of 1973 was appointed Manager of Horwich RMI. Having lifted the club to 11th in the Cheshire League, he resigned from the post in July 1975. Billy had been appointed youth team coach for Oldham Athletic in 1974 and served the club loyally, being rewarded with a testimonial match against Burnley in August 1993. He stood in as caretaker manager for the Latics for 8 games between October and December 2001. In February 2003, he was made redundant from his post as senior youth coach with Oldham after 27 years’ full-time service. He underwent major surgery in November 2004 but recovered to become a scout for his beloved Latics in May 2008.
