Biography

Fred was on Manchester City’s books as a teenager before the war and made a single appearance for Ashton United in August 1947 before signing for Stockport County in December 1947. Made his League debut at home to Gateshead, 25/09/1948 and altogether clocked up 214 appearances for the Hatters - without scoring – through to 56/57. It was all the more remarkable given that he remained a part-time professional throughout this time.
Then featured for Cheadle Rovers, becoming Manager for eight years during which time they won the Manchester League on four occasions and the Gilgryst Cup twice. Appointed as Nantwich Manager during the 1966 close season and even turned out as left back in the 2-1 defeat at Manchester University, 09/03/1968.
Sadly died of a heart attack in 1985.
