Nantwich stormed into the Second Round of the Cheshire Senior Cup, brushing aside Blue Square North outfit Hyde United on a cold and damp night at the Weaver Stadium. Matchwinner Sam Madeley warmed the Dabber fans with two well earned goals in his first full start after signing from Woodley Sports. And, on a night of cheer for Dabber chief Peter Hall, former Crewe Alexandra midfielder Kevin Street made his first Nantwich appearance following a lengthy lay-off after rupturing his cruciate ligament.

Hall fielded a youthful line-up and must have been pleased with how his young guns took the game to their more experienced opponents. Liam Dawson forced Hyde keeper Michael Jones into an early diving save before the hosts went ahead on 19 minutes. Dawson used his pace to open up the Hyde defence down the left and when he pulled the ball back into the danger area Omar Mahmoud was on hand to tuck the ball neatly past Jones.

Dawson was again in the thick of it on 36 minutes when his rasping free-kick 30 yards out on the right crashed against the crossbar. Such was its venom that the ball rebounded to outside the penalty area where Madeley was on hand to rifle through a ruck of players to increase Nantwich’s lead.

Ben Chapman looked impressive in the Nantwich goal and when Mark Lees threaded a ball through to Scott Mooney shortly before the interval, the teenager pulled off a smart diving save.

After the break, Nantwich continued at a lively pace and Dawson saw a long ranger fizz past the post. Half-time substitute Nathan Arnold was proving a menace to the Nantwich defence and he reduced the deficit just after the hour mark when he glided past three defenders and drilled past Chapman at the near post.

There was an instant response from the Dabbers, though, when that man Madeley made it 3-1. Jones could only palm a corner as far as Matt Rhead whose blistering volley was headed in at close range by Madeley. Youth player Lee McAnulty entered the fray in place of Mahmoud and put in an impressive debut as Hyde struggled to get a foothold back in the game.

Scott McNiven forced another fine save from Chapman and then struck the post five minutes from time but there could be little doubt that the night belonged to Hall’s youthful side.
