A lively opening, with the game continually switching ends. Nantwich created the first opportunity through a Jake Sedgemore free kick that went straight through to Ashton ‘keeper Terry Smith before rebounding into the path of Michael Lennon who was unlucky to witness his effort blocked by the ‘Robins’ custodian. In further Nantwich moves Dave McPherson fired wide after being put through by Matt Rhead whilst a Dave Tickle free kick was saved by the Ashton ‘keeper.

Meanwhile, Ashton winger Ian Howard squandered a good opportunity by firing wide when well placed whilst a square ball from the bye line by Matty O’Neill into the path of Calum Flanagan cleared the bar.

Goal: 55minutes. Nantwich surged into the Ashton area to win a corner on the visitors left hand side – central defender Darren Tinson rising in the 6 yard box to meet Dave Tickle’s flag kick to put the ‘Dabbers’ ahead with a bullet header beyond Smith.

On the hour Ashton pressure secured the visitors a corner that Jones did well to push over the bar from inside a crowded 6 yard box. Meanwhile, Tinson cleared from the second corner to send Nantwich forward into the Ashton half before a Sedgemore free kick was cleared just ahead of a great opportunity that fell to Lennon but in a one on one with Smith the ‘Dabbers’ leading scorer fluffed his chance to notch his 7th goal of the season. Meanwhile midfielder Omar Mahmoud left the field to well deserved applause after a solid performance from the Egyptian youngster who took a knock on an ankle before being replaced by Rodney Jack. Goal: 83 minutes. And it was the introduction of the former Crewe forward whose mazy run in the 82nd minute led to the ‘Dabbers’ second goal. Jack’s run was halted just outside the area and from the free kick Jake Sedgemore’s 83rd minute powerful stunning shot screamed into the roof of the net for which Smith didn’t even move.

Glyn Blackhurst replaced the hard working Lennon late in the game whilst in the last action on a night when Nantwich put in their best performance of the season to date a Matt Rhead close range shot beat Smith before agonizingly rebounding off the legs of a defender stood on the line.

Nantwich move up one place to 4th ahead of Saturday’s long trip to Norfolk where they meet 6th in the table Kings Lynn.
