Biography

Started his playing career with Crook Hall and Consett before signing for Stoke City as an amateur. He made his Potters’ debut as a 17 year-old against Middlesbrough but during his National Service in the RAF he broke his leg and never recaptured his true form.
After making 9 first team appearances as an inside forward in six years at the Victoria Ground, Colin joined Crewe Alexandra in March 1959, but soon moved on to Stafford Rangers. He joined Macclesfield (1962-64:72,23) late in the 62/63 campaign and was part of the Macc side that did the double in 63/64 winning the Cheshire County League and Cheshire Senior Cup. The inside-left made 53 Cheshire County League and 19 Cup appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 18 League and 5 Cup goals through to 64/5.
Moved on to Stafford Rangers where, at the age of 30, ‘Hutch’ became one of Stafford’s youngest ever Managers and his appointment as player-manager in 1966 led to an upturn in the club’s fortunes. They lifted the Cheshire League Cup and after finishing as Cheshire County League runners-up, were promoted to the Northern Premier League in 1969.
Colin was appointed Manager of Nantwich in January 1973 taking the club from being perennial strugglers to a force in the Cheshire County League. His crowning glory was guiding the Dabbers to Cheshire Senior Cup glory in 1976 with the club lifting the trophy for the first time in over 40 years. He led the club to what was then their highest Cheshire County League placing before resigning at the end of November 1979 to take up the reins at Droylsden.
Outside football, he ran a successful stationery business in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
