Biography

Fred played for Crewe Alexandra’s ‘A’ team before joining Nantwich during the 1947/48 Crewe & District League campaign. A regular with the Cheshire Cadets side, trained by Dixie Dean, the half-back signed for Whitchurch Alport (1948-50) in August 1948 but returned to Nantwich in September 1950.

Having switched to left back, he signed for Cheshire County League Runcorn (1950-52) in February 1951 and was selected a few times to play for Cheshire in the Northern Counties' Amateur Championship. Appears to have helped out Nantwich when Runcorn were without a game in September 1952 before leaving Canal Street to sign for Crewe Alexandra in August 1953. Made his debut in the Alex's FA Cup 1st Round replay win at Bradford City and made one League appearance three days later at home to Stockport County, 28/11/1953.

Was a regular in the Cheshire County League with Congleton Town (1955-58:118,1) before re-joining Nantwich on professional terms in October 1960.
