Biography

A promising schoolboy player who represented the Cheshire county side and had trials for England schoolboys. Ernie played for Willaston White Star and originally joined Crewe Alexandra (1937/38:19,7lge) in October 1937 as an inside forward, making his League debut against Oldham Athletic, 15/01/1938. Transferred to Wolves in May 1938 for a then club record fee of £1800, but made just one appearance before the start of the Second World War.

Turned out for Stockport County in wartime football before captaining Northwich Victoria for the first half of the 45/46 season after cessation of hostilities, netting 5 goals. Left the Drill Field in January 1946, signing for Bournemouth (1946-48:80,8lge). Returned north to Carlisle United (48/49:5,1lge) in November 1948 and then joined Macclesfield Town (49/50:9,0) in the summer of 1949. Left Macc in October 1949, signing for Cheshire County League rivals Runcorn (49/50) before dropping down to the Mid-Cheshire League with Nantwich in the 1950 close season. Made his debut in the 3-2 home win over Northwich Victoria Reserves, 19/08/1950.

Returned to Crewe in the 1950s as coach, becoming manager in 1964. Retained the post until effectively sacking himself in 1971 because he felt a younger manager should take charge of the club. Also acted as club secretary until 1972, returning to the dugout in 1974 before Harry Gregg arrived in January 1975.

Players developed during his time at Crewe included internationals Stan Bowles and John Mahoney. Tagg is often quoted in respect of Bowles's gambling problems; he used to give Stan's wages direct to his wife, saying: "If Stan could pass a betting shop like he can pass a football, he would be all right." Tagg was also acknowledged by soccer coach Alan Hargreaves for giving him the opportunity to enter professional football.

Being manager at Crewe was not well-paid, and Tagg supplemented his income by delivering milk and managing a beer delivery round. Later managed The Vine pub in Crewe. Became an Honorary Life Vice President of the Alex in 1984 and was incorporated into Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council's Roll of Honour.
