Biography

John was a promising youngster who helped Mid-Cheshire Schoolboys reach the Semi-Finals of the English Schools’ Trophy. Started out with Warrington Town (1961-63:44gls), making his Mid-Cheshire League debut in 1961/62 scoring 4 goals.
As a 16 year old, he signed amateur forms with Everton in November 1962 and finished that 62/63 season as Warrington’s top scorer with 30 goals. Added another 10 goals in the first part of 63/64 and, having come to the attention of Liverpool, he signed professionally for the Reds in December 1963 for a fee of £25! Made his League debut for Liverpool on 26 April 1965 with some regulars being rested ahead of the FA Cup Final. Although he scored in the 3-1 win at Wolves, it proved to be his only League game for Liverpool and he switched to Chester (1966-67:4+1,0) in June 1966 and then dropped into non-league football with Wigan Athletic (68/69:22,0lge) in 1968.
He moved on to Winsford United (69/70), switching to Nantwich in October 1969, making his debut in the 3-1 home defeat to Ellesmere Port Town, 11/10/1969. Finished the season as top scorer but left the club early the following season and later served Lostock Gralam (1974).
