Biography
Gerry featured for Middlewich Athletic as a teenager in the 1952/53 season. Signed by Northwich Victoria (1953-55:13,5), he made his Cheshire County League debut late the following season, making 3 appearances and netting his first goal in the final match of the season against Hyde United. Helped Vics’ reserves capture the Cheshire Amateur Cup in 1955 with a hat-trick in the Final. Returned to Middlewich – scoring 100 goals for them in the 55/56 season – which led to him joining Oldham Athletic (1956-58:62,23) in May 1956. A regular goalscorer for the Latics, Scored a goal every other game for the Latics during their 1957/58 campaign in the old Third Division North but departed the following season having netted 21 goals in 58 league appearances for the Boundary Park club. He then joined Witton Albion (1959-60:88,55) in the 1959 close season and in two seasons netted 55 goals.
Moved on to Nantwich, top scoring in 61/62, and then signing for Welsh side Borough United. Netted 38 goals in 62/63 helping them lift the Welsh Cup and taking part in their memorable European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign – including scoring against Sliema Wanderers in front of 17,000 at Wrexham.
After three seasons in the Welsh League, he re-joined Nantwich, scoring twice on his return in a 8-1 trouncing of Hyde United Reserves in the Manchester League in January 1966. Also had spells with Colwyn Bay and Winsford United (1965-68) where he also became a coach, later serving as Manager of Moulton (74/75).
