DRIVING rain, sleet and snow put paid to Kendal Town’s hopes of moving back into the UniBond Premier Division’s play-off places.
The home match against Nantwich Town was abandoned at half-time as weather conditions deteriorated, but Kendal manager Lee Ashcroft felt the game could have continued as the ball was still moving in play.
He said: “We could have had the groundsman on the pitch at half-time but we weren’t given the opportunity.
“The ball wasn’t stopping in play. It is just very frustrating.”
Nantwich manager Peter Hall approached referee Paul Hodgkinson five minutes before the break to abandon the tie as water lay on one area of the pitch, just outside the Kendal penalty box.
Hodgkinson saw the game out to half-time but made the dubious decision to cancel it after inspecting the pitch for a good five minutes.
The home faithful were disappointed with the decision as Ashcroft's men led 2-0 after some excellent play in a first half they had dominated.
Carl Osman put Kendal ahead after just five minutes when he was fed the ball by Andy Bell inside the penalty area.
Keeping his composure, Osman struck the ball firmly past the hapless Lee Jones in the Nantwich goal from ten yards out.
Town got their second after 33 minutes when a ball played across the goal by Bell was deflected into the net by Nantwich defender Charlie Reeves.
