Kendal Town 1 – 0 Nantwich Town
Nantwich crashed out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle with a 1-0 defeat at Kendal Town.
Kevin Leadbetter’s seventh minute penalty was enough for the Cumbrians to progress to the Second Qualifying Round.
It was the second meeting of the two sides in the space of a week after Nantwich were victorious in last weekend’s FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie.
Nantwich made three changes to the side that had defeated the Cumbrians with Liam Prince, Marco Adaggio and Tom Urwin all returning.
The Dabbers had the first chance inside three minutes but Sean Cooke’s free-kick went harmlessly wide.
The game’s only goal followed shortly after as Liam Prince’s clumsy challenge on Danny Wisdom left referee Paul Marsden with no choice but to point to the spot.
Leadbetter slotted the ball into Jonny Brain’s left hand corner to score what proved to be the winner.
Kendal continued to dominate throughout the first half and could have doubled their advantage on the half hour mark.
The impressive Danny Williams cut inside from the right and unleashed a fierce left footed strike that had to be acrobatically saved by Brain.
Cooke came close to equalising for The Dabbers just before half time but he scuffed Niall Maguire’s cut back wide.
Jimmy Quinn’s men reacted well after half time and should have equalised just after the hour mark when Ben Mills beat the offside trap but couldn’t beat Tom Newton in the Kendal goal.
Although Nantwich started to apply more pressure on the Kendal back four they never really created any clear cut chances in the final stages.
The game could have been over in the closing stages as Williams latched onto Tom Kilifin’s cross but his header was well blocked by Cameron Mitchell.
