Biography

Talented youngster who represented Crewe FA and Cheshire FA at youth level, he played in the Mid-Cheshire League with Rolls Royce as a teenager and signed for Crewe Alexandra. ‘Mayo’ became a virtual ever-present for Crewe (1975-76:42+1,3) after making his debut at home to Northampton Town in March 1976 - while still in Sixth Form.

Spurned professional football to follow his career in banking and, in the summer of 1977, Colin Hutchinson signed him for the Dabbers, making his debut in the 3-0 defeat at Chorley, 20/08/1977. Became club captain and earned selection for the FA Non-League XI in a representative match against the University Athletics Union in March 1979.

In June 1979 he transferred to Northwich Victoria (1979-80:115,13) for an initial fee of £2750, going on to represent England’s semi-professional team. The club pocketed a further £2000 from a sell on-clause when a £10,000 fee took him from Northwich to fellow Conference side Telford United (1981-88:125+13,12 lge) in October 1981.
