Biography

Ronnie first appeared for Nantwich as a teenager, debuting in the 2-0 home defeat to Glossop, 31/08/1982. Then signed for Congleton Town (82/83:9,3) and had stints at Alsager Town, Kidsgrove Athletic and Newcastle Town before re-joining Nantwich from Hanley Town in the 1988 close season.

Made a big impact becoming club captain and earning the NWCL Division 2 Player of the Month award for January 1989. His goals earned a move to Port Vale (1988-90:28,0) in March 1989 for a reputed fee of £2000, making his debut as a substitute at Chesterfield, 15/04/1989. In January 1990 he was loaned to Peterborough United (89/90:18,5), and left Vale Park for Preston North End (1990-91:43,12) for a £80,000 fee in February 1991. Moved on to Exeter City (1992-93:67,25) and in December 1993 Huddersfield Town paid £70,000 for his services.

His goals at Huddersfield (1993-95:124,42) helped the Terriers gain promotion to the First Division in 1995 and earned the nickname ‘Rocket Ronnie’. Moved on to Bury (1996-97:59,12) winning the Second Division title in 1997 and served Oldham Athletic (97/98:9,4) and Burnley (1998-00:68,3) where an achilles problem at the end of the 00/01 season ended his playing days. Appointed as reserve coach at Turf Moor, he followed Stan Ternant to Gillingham as Assistant Manager in December 2004.

Appointed Manager of Gillingham in November 2005 but parted company with the Kent outfit in September 2007. Then took up coaching roles at Huddersfield Town, Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United, and Bury. Briefly took charge of Bury in October 2013 following a period as caretaker-manager and later served on the coaching staff at Cardiff City (2016-19). When Neil Warnock became Manager at Middlesbrough in June 2020, he was appointed to the coaching staff and after they left in November 2021, he followed Warnock as his Assistant Manager at Huddesfield (Feb-Sept 2023) and then Aberdeen, Feb 2024.
