MICKLEOVER Sports claimed a deserved point at Nantwich Town last night – but they might easily have taken all three in this Evo-Stik Premier Division encounter.
Indeed, Sports had a golden opportunity to bag an away win in the 80th minute when Alex Steadman was sent clear but his low shot was blocked by Nantwich keeper Adam Alcock.
It was the visitors who threatened first in the game, Steadman getting past his marker in the fourth minute and clipping the ball past the keeper only to see his effort cleared off the line by Chris Flynn.
Sports keeper Damien Clarke then saved well from Michael Lennon in the seventh minute before Jordan Connerton shot wide for the hosts four minutes later.
In the 12th minute, Danny Martyn's dangerous cross almost brought about an own goal but Allcock managed to hold the ball on the line.
At the other end, John Guy made a tremendous tackle to deny Nantwich's Jordan Connerton in the 15th minute.
Steve Fortune, making his debut for Sports, then saw his 20-yard shot gathered by the diving Allcock.
The home side almost took the lead in the 28th minute when a long free kick found Charlie Reeves unmarked but he screwed his shot across goal and wide.
However, in the 34th minute Sports went close when Kieran O'Connell dribbled along the bye line and pulled the ball back for Carl Ashton, who shot wide from 10 yards.
Lewis Short shot over for the visitors before Clarke produced a good save to deny Michael Lennon.
Sports defended solidly in the second half and created a number of chances.
Fortune shot wide from 25 yards and O'Connell set up Ashton again after another fine run but the eventual shot was straight at the keeper.
Then came the late chance for Steadman but he couldn't break the deadlock as the points were shared.
